Film Appreciation

LEARNING THROUGH FILMS, LEARNING TO WATCH FILMS

Five short films were screened at the campus with support from the German Culture Centre – Goethe Zentrum, Hyderabad . They were

Fatma – an Egyptian film of 15 minutes duration
Going for water – a Mongolian film of 5 minutes duration
Journey to Mars – a Venezuelan film of 16 minutes duration
Ponds of Mirror – an Iranian film of 9 minutes duration
Pur – Anne Frank – A life in a Hideway – A German film of 29 minutes duration

We appreciated the short films for the following reasons

Ponds of Mirror

I liked it as it shows the love of the boy towards his pet fish that he is even prepared leave it in a pond full of fishes to save it's life. That's real love.

I loved this Iranian film. It's about a boy and a fish. Without any dialogues the film made us understand that the boy was determined to save the fish. The boy was clever, compassionate and kind.

Journey to Mars:

I liked the expressions of the cartoon like characters which I guess were simple clay models very well animated.

Saagar

It was about a boy who wanted to go to Mars. He finds himself on Mars, just because he dreamt about it and made it happen.

The little girl is brave. She does not leave the water pulley on seeing the dog. But does it after she reaches home!

Krishna Prem

I loved to see the little girl who was scared of dogs and had to pass by a ferocious one, to fetch some water for her family. The girl was brave and hardworking. It even showed that in Mongolia one had to go far to fetch water.

Ishita

I liked the' I Can Do ‘spirit of the little girl.

Kanchan
Std V

The Mongolian movie touched my heart as it shows the courage of a little girl who was determined to get the water, even when the path to the water was scary. She fetched it once. The water spillsl. She goes again determined to get it again.

Siddhangana

Fatma:

The girl loved to go to school. She had to walk for an hour to reach the school daily. Even after all the hard work she had a smile on her face.

Aditi
Std III

I liked this movie of an Egyptian girl who wanted to study like her brothers. Her desire to study was so much that she could convince her uncle that she would study and even do the farm work everyday. She knew how to make her dream come true. I loved it!

Mary

Anne Frank- A Life in A Hideaway

I liked it because it talked all about Anne's Diary and her life of hiding from the Nazis. It would have been very hard for her to do so. If I were her I wouldn't have survived.

Vidya
Std IV

The movie was great as it shows little bit of what happened during the World War II.

Reading Autobiography

Reading is the best thing for me in the world. For I feel I get to know everything. Reading is very dear to me because there are wonderful stories and characters in the books. When I was a child my parents bought me colourful and nice books. My mother used to read out stories at bedtime for me. But know I know how to read on my own. I read books of different authors my favourite being Enid Blyton. I also like reading USBORNE young readers' series. I like being in the school library and also visiting different libraries and book fairs. In other words wherever there are books, I like being there for reading is FUN.

I do not remember about my reading habits when I was a small child so i am writing about my last year's reading behaviour.

I like reading a lot. My friends really influence me. We discuss and try out different books. My favourite author is Roald Dahl. I read books which have more than 20 pages. I like reading all kinds of books such as Comics, novels, magazines etc. My favourite book is ‘The Witches' by Roald Dahl. I loved reading when I was in Holland also. I used to read Oxford reading tree series. I started reading from Stage 2 and went up to Stage 8. That really made me happy. As a small child I used to read News paper and magazines. My parents call me a book worm. I love all kinds of books, big ones and small ones.

Things to do when you get angry

Some people have place called ‘Anger Room'. When you are angry you can go in this room and shout and let your anger out. But when you know how to control your anger, you don't need one. There are two ways to control your anger. The first one to count one to twenty and the second one is to drink a glass of water. So I feel it is better to control your anger than to sit in an anger room.

My Kite

I went flying a kite in the lawn
Every time I tried it,
It only fell down.
My brother tried to fly it,
But he was too small,
I tried my best to fly it,
And it finally rose up.
But,
Fell Down,
Again.

A Beautiful Bird

A Beautiful Bird
Flew up to the sky
And took many rounds
When it got tired
It flew to the earth,
And rested for awhile

The Future World

I was sitting on my bed, looking outside the window thinking about what the future would be 1000 years from now.

In future there will be no cars or buses. Instead there would be rockets that would hover slightly above the road. The sun would have come too close to the earth so the climate would be burning hot. Hence, people would not wear regular clothes. The girls would wear spaghetti straps shirts and mini skirts.

Boys would wear shorts and a loose shirt. In this world you will not be able to see light bulbs because they will be invisible. If you were hungry you could just reach into the freezer and pull out any kind of food you want.

In future world there will be many changes in people lives like I just told you. I hope you will like the future world and get used to that too!!!

The world that would be….

I thought about what I dreamt of last night about future.

My imagination went wild. First were the roads, all the roads were made of polished metal and the cars were flying and they ran on helium. Although buses went on ground, there was almost no space for grass now! So cows ate candies!

They even had trained robot butlers to do whatever the owner wanted. Kids had a video game attached to their sunglasses. There were new watches where men can go to work on their watches. Women had fancy hi-tech jewellery that hung on kitchen utensils.

I think the world would be much better in future.

Imagining a different world for future

One sunny day I sat down and started imagining how the world would be thousands of years later. It's fun to imagine.

There will be no space to live, so we will live on Mars. We will eat tablets which will contain Vitamin A, B,C,D. There wouldn't be any telephones but there will be a machine which you can fix to your ear and talk with it to anybody. Skies would be clear with no traffic jam at all, for the cars and other vehicles will float in the air.

I don't know if this will happen or not? If it happens then I am sure the people will adapt very well to this future situation and live happily.

Universe

The Universe is all the skies
Reaching for beyond your eyes
The Universe is all Seas
Spreading in unseen degrees
The Universe is all the Earth
Besides just the place that gave you birth
If you can with your small eye
Know the star in all the sky
If, of all these as there be
From one beach you know the sea
If, of all on the Earth
You can know one meadow's worth
You might do great deal more
To understand the Universe

Thank You!

Vroom,Vroom Vroom. I am going to Manu! Who is Manu? A fair, handsome, intelligent, inventor wise…, I can fill the whole page. He is my elder cousin. He is very funny some times and serious on other times. He is sensible. He is cute. But never lets me touch him. He saves me from scoldings. He takes the blame on him or says that my other cousins did it. Well! Let me introduce you to somebody else now. But now it's not a ‘he' it's a ‘she'. She is a fair cute naughty fighter and great trickster. But I don't fall into her tricks. She is Manu's younger sister. Her name is Ria. As I mentioned earlier, she is very naughty. But when she plays a prank and sees somebody else getting scolding for it, she owns her mistake. She is kind hearted. Now, let me narrate an incident in which she saved me. One day my grandmother gave us both a banana each. When she finished eating it, she threw the peel on the ground. When Manu came running, he slipped and fell. My grandmother started scolding me. That's when Ria came to my rescue and told my grandmother that actually she was the one who threw the peel on the ground. That's how she saved me. I enjoy playing with my cousins for its fun with them all the time.

Letter to my Favourite Author

This letter is addresed to Roald Dahl-My favourite author.

Dear Roald Dahl,

It would not be enough to say that you are my favourite author, for you are more than ‘favourite'. Your books are fantastic. I wonder, how you are able to read our minds and write just what we want to read. Your stories are so uniquely illustrated and are funny and your writing makes them even funnier. I love the titles of your books, especially ESIO TROT.
Your stories make our mind wander. I am about to complete reading all your books, I sometimes worry what will I read once I finish reading your last book also.

Yours crazy reader
